Goal #1: To see the Great Commission come alive
Dear LTCC Family,
One of the ways that our church reaffirms and renews our commitments to praying for harvest laborers and participating in the work of those in the field is through our annual Missions Emphasis Weekend on Oct. 27-29. It is a visual reminder of Jesus’ words to His disciples:
37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” [Matthew 9:37-38]
It is not something we do just to fill a few days on the church calendar. It is one of the most important weeks for our church in the year and is an event we approach with clear purposes in mind. What are the goals for our church during Missions Emphasis Weekend?
1. To see the Great Commission come alive
During the Missions Emphasis Weekend, we have the chance to see the Great Commission come alive as Micah and Laura Myers, our missionaries to Papa New Guinea, give testimonies and share about their mission field. Newer Christians will be able to understand the big picture of the Great Commission and their church’s far-reaching impact through missions. Seasoned Christians, are reminded of the need to develop a stronger burden for the lost.
2. To develop relationships with missionaries
One of the great advantages and defining characteristics of our Missions Emphasis Weekend allows us to have direct relationships with the missionaries that LTCC supports. There are even greater opportunities to meet the missionaries and to seek to understand the unique challenges and needs of their fields, and learn how to pray for them.
3. To develop a heart for missions among young people
For young people to get to hear first-hand accounts of the power of the gospel in other countries and cultures is faith-building for them. During this weekend, missionaries will be sharing with our kids through the group events as well as in their own missionary led program Friday night. Additionally, our Outreach Partners will have displays at church where young people are encouraged to meet them personally. Many teenagers and Bible college students, including some who are now adult missionaries, were sent out from Lake Tapps because they sensed God’s call to missions in part from the missionary focus at LTCC.
4. To encourage our missionaries
The Myers who will be presenting this week are here on home assignment staying in the church parsonage. This does not mean they are on vacation, but they are here to serve and reconnect with our church family. We want to be a blessing to them as a church. By better understanding their needs through time with them, we’re able to know better how to pray for them. We pray that the weekend will be an encouragement to them as well.
5. To renew our giving commitments for world evangelism
Because our church pledges direct support to missionaries, we need to be faithful in our commitments to them. By having a designated week each year, we as a church family, look to the harvest field and prayerfully ask the Lord to guide us in our financial commitments. God’s plan for giving to missions through the local church not only enables His work to flourish all around the world, but it gives Christians an opportunity to invest in the eternal.
