Family Ministry

Dear LTCC Family,

When I began helping in the Children’s Ministry almost 5 years ago, there was a lot to learn and so I leaned heavily on those who had experience. There were already a number of books in my office from Pam Page and Jenny Heck, who served in this role before me. Starting with those and then reading others, I quickly realized that Children’s Ministry isn’t just about providing curriculum for kids on Sunday mornings. It’s also about connecting with and supporting the parents. So, it really is a ministry that encompasses the whole family.

“Family Ministry” is a term that has been gaining ground in church culture. The premise comes from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 regarding what the Lord gave Moses to teach the Israelites that they were then to teach their children. In this we see that God intended parents to be the primary disciple makers in the life of a child. And we see this vision continue throughout scripture:

"Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck." - Proverbs 1:8-9

"but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” - Matthew 19:14

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[b] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:19-20

"Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." - Ephesians 6:4

Heeding God’s Word, the mission for Family Ministry at LTCC has become parents and church leaders working together to disciple children. Adopting a strategy from Brian Haynes called Legacy Milestones, we have developed a pathway to help guide parents on a journey of intentional discipleship with their children, from birth to graduation.

Last fall we had our first Parent Equipping session. This laid the foundation for the Milestones idea by focusing on the overall mission of helping equip parents. In February, we started session two and have been teaching specifically to each Milestone. Matt Moench, Gary Warne, Brian Peterson and I have taken turns leading discussions on the topics of child dedication, family devotions, intentionally capturing “on the go” moments, baptism and communion. In March we will tackle the subjects that affect middle school and high school students: identity in Christ, use of technology, biblical roles of men and women, accountability, service, and missions.

I have been encouraged by our parents at LTCC. Over the years I’ve seen how many of them are already teaching their kids at home but are now engaging in the Equipping sessions at church to learn more. They’ve been able to see that they are not alone in the process (and sometimes struggle) of raising their kids in “the fear and knowledge of the Lord”.

I am inspired by those who serve in Family Ministry on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. They faithfully share the gospel in word and action. And they come prepared to lovingly interact with the kids. This ministry couldn’t happen without them.

I am thankful for Matt Moench who has come on board to take Family Ministry to the next level. He has a heart for discipleship, a deep knowledge of God’s Word, and a boldness to share his faith in Christ with others. We are blessed to have him in a leadership role here at Lake Tapps.

Please continue to pray for our parents and those who lead their children at church. Pray that along the way the kids at LTCC would come to know and believe the saving work of Christ in their life.

For the elders and deacons,

Justine
