Series in the Psalms

Dear LTCC Family,

This coming Sunday we are going to be starting a 5-week series on the Psalms entitled “Training in Honest Prayer.” I think this will provide a type of deep exhale for us after coming out of the book of Daniel. Just think, we’ll get some respite from beasts, horns, goats, and lions!:) And if you are like me, maybe you will stop having dreams about beasts and horns too!

Over the next five weeks, each Sunday we will be exploring one particular chapter from the Psalms and looking at different ways in which the Psalms truly train us to pray with genuine honesty. Perhaps more than any other book in the Bible, the Psalms offer us the gamut of human emotion and experience. Lament, joy, wisdom, confession, anger, fear, and sadness are expressed throughout the book. As John Calvin once put it, the Psalms are “mirrors of the soul.” Personally speaking, I have found the Psalms to be a place where I find rest from weariness, peace from anxiety, and courage when I am feeling afraid. Even more honestly, when I have found it difficult to read the Scriptures, the Psalms have been the one place in the Bible that has brought me back to God.

But far more than the Psalms being personal, it could be argued that this was the favorite book of the New Testament writers. It’s certainly the most quoted Old Testament book in the New Testament and we know that our Lord Jesus quoted from it often.

My one encouragement for all of us this week would simply be to ask God to teach us afresh (through the Psalms) to become people who pray honestly to Him. The Psalms are a wonderful guide to that end. May God continue to use this ancient book to speak to us and shape us into His likeness. (If you want to read ahead for this Sunday, we’ll be in Psalm 139).

A couple of more encouragements. I’d urge you to consider and pray about connecting with one of the studies that will be starting up this fall. For more information, as well as days and times, click here. Finally, men it’s not too late to sign up for tonight’s men’s BBQ & Outdoor movie night. You can let us know you’re coming here.

See you on Sunday!
